  1. In a prison cell in the Middle Ages
  2. It is cold, damp, gritty, dark.  Mud and filth caked on stone walls
  3. Cannons rumbling in background, musty smell, cold damp iron bars
  4. The entire story takes place in this cell

  6. The Norman soldiers enter Joe's cell and beat him up
  7. Joe tries to fight back with some tricks his Dad had taught him
  8. The soldiers fight dirty - they tie Joe up and begin alternately kicking him
  9. Joe tries to break free but the harder he struggles, the harder they kick
  10. They begin telling him lies about Susan
  11. Through all this, Joe remains stalwart (though a little shaken)
  12. The soldiers finally pull the ultimate - they release rats
  13. Joe tries to bite the rats but the rats are too quick for him and bite him

  15. Joe Wright, in his twenties, is extremely broad-shouldered, handsome, strong
  16. He wants his freedom and to be back with his lover, Susan Olfield
  17. Joe's weakness is rats -- he hates them
  18. His strength is his muscles and his size -- he is a brute
  19. Joe loves England dearly, almost more than Susan

  21. The antagonists are Norman invaders out to capture the British throne
  22. These guys are the slimiest, filthiest, crudest bunch of mercenaries ever
  23. They want Joe's service in their fight for the throne of England
  24. They hold Susan captive using her to blackmail Joe

  26. The conflict is Joe versus the Normans (society)
  27. They will test Joe's love for Susan
  28. The Normans have already captured Joe and begin physical torture
  29. They apply mental torture by telling him that Susan no longer loves Joe
  30. They go back to physical torture using rats to terrorize Joe

  32. The ultimate torture is when they tie Joe and release the rats on him
  33. Joe is tortured by having rats eat off him as he lies tied on the floor
  34. Joe can't stand it.  He disavows Susan and joins them in their fight
  35. Joe finds life with the Frenchman not that bad
  36. He falls in love with a French woman named Darlene
