- In a prison cell in the Middle Ages
- It is cold, damp, gritty, dark. Mud and filth caked on stone walls
- Cannons rumbling in background, musty smell, cold damp iron bars
- The entire story takes place in this cell

- The Norman soldiers enter Joe's cell and beat him up
- Joe tries to fight back with some tricks his Dad had taught him
- The soldiers fight dirty - they tie Joe up and begin alternately kicking him
- Joe tries to break free but the harder he struggles, the harder they kick
- They begin telling him lies about Susan
- Through all this, Joe remains stalwart (though a little shaken)
- The soldiers finally pull the ultimate - they release rats
- Joe tries to bite the rats but the rats are too quick for him and bite him

- Joe Wright, in his twenties, is extremely broad-shouldered, handsome, strong
- He wants his freedom and to be back with his lover, Susan Olfield
- Joe's weakness is rats -- he hates them
- His strength is his muscles and his size -- he is a brute
- Joe loves England dearly, almost more than Susan

- The antagonists are Norman invaders out to capture the British throne
- These guys are the slimiest, filthiest, crudest bunch of mercenaries ever
- They want Joe's service in their fight for the throne of England
- They hold Susan captive using her to blackmail Joe

- The conflict is Joe versus the Normans (society)
- They will test Joe's love for Susan
- The Normans have already captured Joe and begin physical torture
- They apply mental torture by telling him that Susan no longer loves Joe
- They go back to physical torture using rats to terrorize Joe

- The ultimate torture is when they tie Joe and release the rats on him
- Joe is tortured by having rats eat off him as he lies tied on the floor
- Joe can't stand it. He disavows Susan and joins them in their fight
- Joe finds life with the Frenchman not that bad
- He falls in love with a French woman named Darlene
